It’s Poisoning Prevention Month – Here’s how to keep your pet safe

Even though we may not think about it, we have multiple items around our house and in our lives that can be toxic to our pets.  With any toxic products, be sure to keep them out of paws reach.  Everyone knows…accidents happen, so it’s best to make sure all toxic items are as inaccessible as possible.  

Here are the top five pet toxins from 2024:

  1. Chocolate.
  2. Marijuana (THC)
  3. Ibuprofen
  4. Xylitol (found in toothpaste, gum and some peanut butter brands)
  5. Lilies (Lilium species- extremely dangerous for felines

Some other frequent poisoning items are:

  • Grapes & Raisins
  • Bromethalin
  • Garlic (cats)
  • Vitamin D overdoses
  • Over the counter drugs.

Signs of Poisoning in Animals

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Excessive Drooling
  • Weakness/Lethargy
  • Lack of Coordination
  • Collapse

            What to do?

            If you believe that your pet has ingested something toxic, call your veterinarian or take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.  

            Always try to determine what your pet has ingested and the quantity.  

            Bring the item with you for the veterinarian to read the ingredient list.  

            If you believe your pet has ingested toxins, monitor their symptoms and share them with your veterinarian.  

            Most importantly, ALWAYS BE HONEST when speaking with your veterinarian.
